The Bluff City Classic was started in1981 with aspirations to be a showcase for area talent to keep their skills sharp during the summer. What eventually happened was the beginning of a tradition. Some of the area’s best talent made their mark on the courts of the Bluff City Classic. From former Memphis State stars like William Bedford, Elliott Perry, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Andre Turner, Keith Lee, Cedric Henderson, Lorenzen Wright, Jimmie “Snap”Hunter to other local legends like Scooter McFadgon, Thaddeus Young, Louis Williams, Carlos Clark, Andre and Erick Lardd, Todd Day, Dewight Stewart, Cory Beck, and Justin Reed, the Bluff City Classic has been the showcase for numerous Memphis prep stars over the past 30 years.
The Bluff City Classic was a summer staple on the Memphis sports scene and at one point changed names to the Jerry Dover Classic, named after the late Jerry Dover Sr. The Bluff was used as a right of passage for many area players. Hundreds of fans packed the gym on a nightly basis to witness these epic games.
After a seven year layoff, the Bluff returned to the city of Memphis last summer and is back to re-energize the summer basketball scene. The area’s best collegiate and professional talent is ready to take basketball to a new level.
